AURAL
AUTOMATA | CALL OF THE VOID
This scene is a result of some image manipulation experiments in which I was trying to gradually change an image such that it blurs in and out, as a function of the volume of specific sound nodes. At some point, I changed to code to draw a line between the volume and modulation particles, which drift across the scene, and it allowed the blurring processes to be more dynamic and interesting. It was a happy accident, I guess. If you watch it long enough, you'll see the image shift from bright blurs, to geometric irregularities, to sharp re-renderings of the original image.
The image is a photograph called
Call of the Wild by Tania Brassesco and Lazlo Passi Norberto. It works well for this specific image manipulation process because it has some detailed focal points, as well as lots of negative space. I'm drawn to this specific image because my mind switches back-and-forth between perceiving it as disturbing vs. perceiving it as a tranquil scene.
The sounds are designed to "wash" across the soundscape in a slowly evolving way. Some sounds help to trigger the blurring effect, whereas other sounds tend to purify or restore the image as they come onto the stage. There are also moments of quiet that emerge occasionally, to help give the soundscape a breath.
